According to files leaked to the Sunday Times newspaper, the Italian striker earned a £1 million bonus over the course of his doomed spell at the Merseyside club – for not spitting at anyone.
"If he spat more than three times, he would be fined a million pounds, or whatever that bonus payment was for the season,” sports journalist Richard Beech told BBC 5 Live.
"If you just think about this in terms of turning up at work at Christmas for your bonus and you go into your boss’ office and he says ‘Steven, you’ve only spat at other employees twice this year so you’re still going to get your bonus’.
"It’s just a little bit weird.”

More than two terabytes of data are said to have been dumped during the latest leak of confidential football documents – including original contracts for a host of superstar players and managers.
A group of European media outlets including the Sunday Times and Spanish daily El Mundo accused Cristiano Ronaldo of financial impropriety over the weekend.
They also pointed the finger at Arsenal star Mesut Ozil and Jose Mourinho, with the Sunday Times claiming his advisers misled the tax authorities in Britain and Spain during inquiries into more than £10 million in earnings hidden through a Caribbean tax haven.
Both Ronaldo and Mourinho strenuously deny any allegations of wrongdoing, releasing a statement via mutual agent Jorge Mendes’ company Gestifute.
The former Inter Milan striker was an expensive flop at Anfield
"Gestifute publicly states that: Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho are fully compliant with their tax obligations with the Spanish and British tax authorities.
"Neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Jose Mourinho have ever been involved in legal proceedings regarding the commission of a tax offence.
"Any insinuation or accusation made to Cristiano Ronaldo or Jose Mourinho over the commission of a tax offence will be reported to the legal authorities and prosecuted.”
