Punchless Liverpool will have to overcome Nathan Redmond’s goal at Anfield in the second leg of this semi-final on January 25 if they are to make Wembley again – but even a note handed to Daniel Sturridge and subsquently passed around the players failed to turn the tide.

Jurgen Klopp said: “Seven or eight of them knew what I wanted immediately. I wanted to change the system. There was no more information but it was enough.

"Maybe it was a little bit too late by the time we gave them it [the note]. That’s not about being frustrated, it’s about trying to do something. Trying to help.

"Whatever I say can’t make it better. The start was good, if we could have done that for 90 minutes it would have been very difficult for Saints.

"I’m not used to such a reaction from my boys. It was not good. The performance does not improve but for the final everything is still open. It was the best result you can get if you don’t win or draw.

"This team always shows reactions. Our goalkeeper Lorus Karius saved us because if it had been 3-4 nil it would be much more difficult. That is his job. But if the goalkeeper has to make saves like this something is wrong.”

Southampton have not reached a cup final since the lost to Arsenal in the 2003 FA Cup final in Cardiff. They have not played in a Wembley final since 1979 and Redmond said: “I should have had four goals.

"I didn’t realise how much time I had but I will learn from those mistakes. At least we won and we can take a lead to Anfield.”

Saints skipper Virgil Van Dijk – a Liverpool target in the January transfer window – said: “We won and kept a clean sheet, which was important. We played good football at times against a great team but we were unlucky.

"It will be tough, we know that, but it’s a good win. We need to believe – a final is something special for the club.”
