Jan Oblak is Jose Mourinho's top target if David de Gea leaves in the summer

Mourinho has sent scouts to watch Atletico Madrid stopper Oblak this season amid fears De Gea will be lured back to his native Spain this summer.

United are desperate to keep De Gea at Old Trafford, but know his lifelong dream is to play for the European champions.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward might be left with no choice but to sanction his record £60m exit.

Stoke’s Jack Butland is a potential replacement if Dea Gea does move on.

But Starsport understands Mourinho has made Slovenian star Oblak his No.1 target to replace the Spanish international.

Losing De Gea would be a huge blow to Mourinho, but the United boss reckons Oblak is the man to fill his boots.

Oblak made his Benfica debut at the age of 17 and was part of the team that won the domestic treble in 2014.

He became the most expensive keeper in La Liga history when he joined Atletico for £16m in 2014.

The 24-year-old was voted the league’s best goalkeeper the following season after conceding just 18 goals in 38 games.

He helped Diego Simeone’s men reach the Champions League final last season - and has established himself as one of the best keepers in Europe.

Starsport understands United bosses - who also want Atletico team-mate Antoine Griezmann - have already sounded Oblak out about a move to Manchester and he is keen to join.

Mourinho would prefer to make a big signing instead of promoting Sergio Romero as his No.1.

The Argentine joined United from Monaco in 2015 and will play in next week’s Europa League Final against Ajax in Stockholm next Wednesday.

But he has played second fiddle to De Gea for most of the time and the arrival of Oblak would cast doubts over his United future.

Romero, who saved a penalty at Southampton on Wednesday night to earn United a draw, said: “For me, it’s very important to be playing. I arrived here on a free and nobody knew me.

“Now with the confidence that Jose gives me and the confidence the players give me, the confidence for me is very important and I will try and do my best for the team.”
