Starsport can reveal the Blues had been looking to ship out the former Arsenal midfielder this summer.
The Premier League champions let it be known they were open to offers for Fabregas.
But after a strong end to the season, Fabregas has won over Chelsea boss Conte and looks to still have a future at Stamford Bridge.
Fabregas, 30, has two years left on his contract and it is understood Conte is happy for him to stay - even though a huge offer could change his mind.
A Chelsea source confirmed last night the club had "tried a few times to sell him".
It now appears they want him for the joint challenge of the Champions League and defending the league title.
The same cannot be said for Diego Costa, who admits he sees no point in trying to fight for his future if he is not wanted.
Costa claimed last week that Conte had told him in a text message that he was not part of the plans.
The striker is keen to rejoin Atletico Madrid and has now ruled out any chance of moving to the Chinese Super League as he does not want to jeopardise his World Cup hopes.
Costa, who scored in Spain's 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Macedonia on Sunday, said: "The fight for a place has to be fair.
"When there is a fair fight you stay and fight. But if there isn't then you have to go."
"You need to ask Conte what has happened, he's the coach and if he has the option of signing someone else and doesn't want to have problems with a senior player then that's normal.
"But there are ways of saying things, ways of doing things.
"If Chelsea don't want me I will choose the best option for me."
