Modric testifies in Croatian football corruption case

Former Dinamo Zagreb director Zdravko Mamic is on trial in Croatia, accused of embezzlement of over 15 million euros and of tax evasion on another 1.5m euros, and Luka Modric was in court on Tuesday to give evidence.

Between the ages of 14 to 22, the midfielder was on Dinamo's books and he discussed his 2008 transfer to Tottenham, with Mamic accused of taking half of the transfer fee paid by the London club.

"I believe that Dinamo received 21m or 23m euros for my transfer to Tottenham," the midfielder told the court in Osijek, according to 24horas.

"Part of that money was paid to me too, based on an attached contract I signed with Dinamo about dividing that money on a 50-50 basis.

"I agreed that with Mr. Mamic."

The Real Madrid player also confirmed that he did then give the majority of this money to the accused director, who some have claimed was the man who truly pulled the strings at the Croatian FA over the years.

"In accordance with our agreement, payments were made to Mamic," the court was told.

"I took the money out at a bank branch and gave it to [the accused's brother] Zoran or to [the accused's son] Mario right there."

Some minor details, relating to dates and the contracts, were changed from a previous testimony.
Another Croatian international Dejan Lovren will testify regarding one of his own transfers on Wednesday.
