Man Utd news: Cristiano Ronaldo return would be 'dream' for Rio Ferdinand
Ronaldo and Ferdinand starred for the Red Devils before the Portuguese left for Real Madrid for £80m in 2009.
The four-time World Player of the Year was linked with a Bernabeu exit last week after throwing his toys out of the pram over alledgedly dodging tax in Spain.
Ferdinand says United should be looking to bring him back to Old Trafford.
And he says a return would be like a 'fairytale' for the club's fans.
"If Cristiano Ronaldo becomes available then the best teams in the world will be queueing up to sign him, simple as that," Ferdinand said on ESPN.
"But I still feel that Real Madrid probably hold all the cards, it's all down to them and it will be their final decision.
"He's under contract, so if they decide to let him go because he wants to leave or because of the situation that he's in in the courts or whatever it is, we'll see.
"As a Manchester United fan I'd love to see him go to Man United.
"It's fairytale stuff, this is the fans' dream, fans have got to be allowed to dream.
"The best player on the planet at the moment, probably going to win the Ballon D'Or again, won the league and the Champions League, who wanted want that at their club?
"Just as an influence, let alone what he brings elsewhere."
