The US Government accuses Rafa Marquez of being a drug lord

Former Barcelona defender, Rafael Marquez, was included in a list published on Wednesday by the Office of Control of Goods of Foreigners (OFAC), of the Treasury Department of the United States, of people who have been frontmen for the drug trafficker Raul Flores Hernandez.

The list includes 21 Mexican citizens, among them Marquez, and 42 national companies of which nine are linked to the player Fundacion Futbol y Corazon, Grupo Deportivo Marquez Pardo, Alvaner Sports Group, Alhoma Nutritional Group, Prosport & Health Imagen, Servicios Educativos And Business and Therapeutic Group of Puerto Vallarta.

The announcement by the United States government implies that visas are immediately cancelled and all assets are frozen, as well as prohibiting any American company from doing any type of business with the player's companies and the other members of the list.

"Raul Flores Hernandez has operated successfully for decades because of his long-standing relationship with other drug cartels and his use of financial frontmen to mask his profits from the sale of illegal drugs," said OFAC Director John E. Smith.

It should be noted that inclusion in this list does not imply a criminal prosecution, however, nor does it exclude it, and this file will be transferred to the Department of Justice.

In addition, those involved in the same may file a lawsuit against the Treasury Department, which would mean a long trial in the United States.

This is the first time that such a high-profile name in the world of Mexican sport is involved.
