Malaysia Cup: Selangor v Kedah the pick of the quarters

Malaysia Super League outfits Selangor and Kedah will face off in the most-intriguing tie of the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals after the final eight were confirmed on Saturday.

Already guaranteed top spot in Group C ahead of the weekend’s action, Kedah went on to claim a 2-0 triumph over Kelantan courtesy of goals by Sandro (24′) and Ken Ilso (77′.

They will now beat Selangor in a rematch of last year’s final after the Red Giants had to settle for a second-place finish in Group D.

This came after they were beaten by Johor Darul Ta’zim 3-1 at the Larkin Stadium on Saturday.

Mohammad Ghaddar proved the be the difference as his brace, along with a Gary Robbat effort, handed the hosts maximum points, while Rufino Segovia grabbed a consolation for Selangor.

JDT’s quarter-final opponents will be Melaka United, who have brushed aside their league struggles with a strong display thus far in the Malaysia Cup, although they were on the receiving end of a 5-3 loss to UiTM FC.

Group D’s dead rubber on Saturday saw Terengganu and Sarawak play out a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Over in Group A, Pahang sealed their last-eight berth by beating T-Team 3-2 with Matheus Alves, Nor Azam Azih and Yamil Romero all on target for Tok Gajah.

Meanwhile, PKNP FC – already assured of top spot in Group A – were held to a 0-0 draw away to Negeri Sembilan.

PKNP are the only second-tier outfit left in the competition and will be looking to make the Premier League proud when they take on FELDA United in the quarters.

FELDA had to settle for second spot in Group B after losing 2-1 to Perak TBG, with Shahrul Saad scoring an 89th minute winner for the latter.

Finally, Kuala Lumpur picked up their first win of the campaign as a Guilherme double fired them to a 2-0 triumph over PKNS FC, although both sides had already been eliminated ahead of Saturday’s matches.
