League One leaders Shrewsbury keep up blistering start with Oldham win

League One leaders Shrewsbury kept up their blistering start to the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Oldham.

Jon Nolan's second-half goal handed the Shrews a fourth-straight victory, while Oldham ended the game with 10 men after Eoin Doyle's injury-time red card.

Shrewsbury went in front after 19 minutes as home goalkeeper Jack Ruddy failed to hold Joe Riley's low cross and the loose ball was forced in by Stefan Payne.

Payne was injured in the process of scoring and Oldham almost snatched an equaliser when Doyle fired wide from a tight angle.

The home side did level after 33 minutes, with Craig Davies powering in a six-yard header from Gevaro Nepomuceno's left-wing cross.

But Doyle wasted a golden chance as he rounded visiting stopper Dean Henderson, only to shoot against the post instead of finding the empty net.

Shrewsbury regained the lead after 65 minutes when Alex Rodman set up Nolan for a cool 10-yard strike inside the far corner.

Latics went close to scoring through Davies and Jack Byrne, but Doyle's second yellow card ended their hopes.
