The midfielder has made a huge impact at St James' Park following his move from Borussia Dortmund.

And his form has not gone unnoticed back home where the 21-year-old is being tipped for a call-up to the Spanish squad in the near future.

Merino cemented his popularity with fans, scoring a late winner against Crystal Palace on Saturday, a result which consolidates the Magpies' fine start to the season.

It's a far cry from his days as a fringe player for the German giants.

He has already made more appearances for Newcastle this term than he did for Dortmund in the whole of last season and earlier this month converted his loan move into a permanent five-year deal.

"You always want to have big ambitions, thinking and dreaming big," he said.

"I'm not going to say I want to do this or that because I am just young.

"Right now, it is about the small steps that can lead to bigger things like the national team at some point.

"But I feel my dreams will be fulfilled if I do the right job here."

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has already tipped Merino to win a full cap during his time in the North East and the youngster himself sees his compatriot as the ideal mentor.

"I am in the right place because I have the confidence of the coach," he said.

"Being here is going to be good for me."
