Godden nets twice as Stevenage return to winning ways in style

Stevenage won for the first time in nine league games by thrashing Chesterfield 5-1 to leave their visitors mired in the League Two relegation zone.

Matt Godden struck twice in the second half to take his tally to 12 goals in all competitions this season and wrap up Stevenage's biggest league win in over a year.

The hosts took the lead inside 13 minutes when a dangerous low cross by Alex Samuel was turned in from close range by Danny Newton at the near post.

A mistake by Ian Evatt led to Boro's second in the 28th minute, the veteran defender misjudged a long ball to allow Dale Gorman through on goal and he calmly found the bottom corner.

Chesterfield momentarily had a foothold when Dennis headed in Andy Kellett's 42nd-minute cross but the hosts immediately restored their two-goal cushion when Newton's cross-shot took a deflection and beat Jake Eastwood.

The result was then effectively wrapped up five minutes into the second half, as Chesterfield failed to deal with Terence Vancooten's long ball, allowing Godden to run on and finish.

The hosts were not finished there either, as Gorman did superbly down the right before sliding through Godden, who dinked the ball over Eastwood for his second.
