United, who brushed aside struggling Stoke last night, are putting the finishing touches to a £65m package to sign the Chilean that would see Henrikh Mkhitaryan head to the Gunners.

But while Manchester City officially pulled out of the race to land Sanchez yesterday, Jose Mourinho could yet have to fight off former club Chelsea for his signature.

City backed out when it became clear how much United were willing to spend on luring Sanchez.

But it remains to be seen whether Antonio Conte is prepared to go toe-to-toe with bitter rival Mourinho.

Chelsea will have to dig deep given United are willing to pay Arsenal £25m for Sanchez with Mkhitaryan, who moved to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund for £30m 18 months ago, valued at a knock-down £10m.

Mourinho all but confirmed the Armenia international had been left out of United's squad for the visit of Stoke because he is on his way out of Old Trafford.

"I would lie if I said it was a pure tactical decision," revealed Mourinho.

If he chooses United, Sanchez will be handed a long-term deal worth in excess of £300,000 a week plus a staggering £25m signing on fee, with another £5m going to his agent Fernando Felicevich.

The massive wage packet would see Sanchez become the highest-paid star at United, with boss Mourinho having spent the last nine months trying to persuade him to move to Old Trafford.

He could also be given the iconic No.7 shirt made so famous by George Best, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mourinho knows Sanchez, 29, is the calibre of player Manchester United need to keep signing if they are to challenge for major honours once again.
