The Belgian winger has been linked with a switch to Real Madrid and has reportedly stalled on a new contract offer at Stamford Bridge amid interest from the La Liga giants.

But the 27-year-old is desperate to play under his hero Zinedine Zidane, who is on the verge of being sacked following a miserable first half of the season.

And Hazard has emerged as City's number one target.

According to the Mirror, Pep Guardiola is prepared to offer a British-record £150m for the forward.

The former Barcelona boss has made it clear that the huge squad makeover he's engineered has meant he's been unable to compete financially for the world's biggest stars.

But he's ready to change his policy at the end of the season.

Guardiola agreed with City chiefs who did not think it was sensible to break their wage structure to bring in Alexis Sanchez, who joined Manchester United on a contract worth £400,000-a-week.

But Hazard is two years younger than the Chilean and Guardiola believes he is reaching the peak of his powers.

The Mirror claim that City are willing to offer him a similar deal to his international team-mate Kevin De Bruyne, who signed a new £300,000-a-week contract this week.

And the runaway Premier League leaders will make a bid this summer if there's still uncertainty over his Chelsea future.

Hazard has been in stunning form for the Blues this season, scoring 12 times and providing eight assists.

City are currently 12 points clear at the top of the table and if they maintain their impressive run then Hazard may be tempted to join a title-winning squad.

Guardiola's side are back in action this afternoon as they travel to Championship side Cardiff in the FA Cup fourth round.
