Dejan Lovren reveals how he punishes himself when he makes a mistake

The Liverpool defender is his own worst critic when he makes a game-changing error

Let's face it; these days, Dejan Lovren is mostly known for making mistakes.

The Liverpool defender has mostly made headlines for all of the wrong reasons this season, with costly errors against Sevilla and Everton, as well as against Spurs last weekend when he inadvertently played Harry Kane onside in the dramatic late draw at Anfield.

And the Croatian has admitted that these mistakes cause him a lot of problems and he often isolates himself from others for days after a bad game.

Speaking openly to Sky Sports, he said: "I'm my biggest critic of myself when I make mistakes.

"I don't talk to anyone for a couple of days, this is me, this is the punishment for myself.

"What do other people think? I'm not bothered.

"What's important is what the manager says because he is the man in charge of me.

"If he's positive about me then that's confirmation for myself that I'm one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

"When you go 18 games unbeaten people will say 'wow he's really good' but when you make mistakes they will point the finger at the back four."

But the 28-year-old - who joined the Reds from Southampton back in 2014 and will play against his former team on Sunday - is still reeling over the referee's decision-making in the draw against Spurs last weekend.

He said: "I still cannot believe it happened, I saw the two situations afterwards and I was even more surprised to be honest because on the pitch it looks different.

"Maybe you say okay first it was a penalty because he touched him, or it was not offside.

"But when you see these images it looks even worse. I just do not understand these rules.

"In this situation we need the VAR system. But we could not find it because nobody understood what was happening.

"Then when I saw what the referees were saying between each other 'did he touch or not', I don't know what he said, but then suddenly he gives a penalty.

"It cannot be like that, you need to be 100 per cent when you give a penalty in the 85th minute and in the 95th minute."
