Paul Hurst remains grounded after Shrewsbury return to League One summit

Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst has his feet firmly rooted on the ground despite his side’s elevation back to the top of the Sky Bet League One table.

Wigan’s defeat to Blackpool and Nathan Thomas’ late winner in the 2-1 victory at Fleetwood saw Shrewsbury move to the summit with 15 games of the season remaining.

However, Hurst is not getting carried away as Blackburn kept the heat on with a last-gasp win at Portsmouth.

Hurst said: “If any teams drop points (like Wigan), I’m sure the fans of those clubs would have been checking the scores and would have been delighted when Fleetwood equalised.

“It is pleasing. I heard the fans during the game and did wonder about the Wigan scoreline.

“They do have a game in hand on us and I think Blackburn had a late winner, there is still a long way to go, 15 games, a third of the season left so we will keep plodding away and they don’t get any easier.

Shaun Whalley scored his 10th of the campaign to break the deadlock before Paddy Madden levelled for Fleetwood on the hour-mark.

Thomas netted eight minutes from time sa hurst watched his side return to winning ways before praising Whalley’s goal tally following a rare headed finish.

He said: “It is not bad at all. (It was) A good way to get it (his 10th goal of the season), I don’t think I’ve really seen him head a ball before!

“Maybe it just hit his head because it was a fantastic ball in (from Thomas), difficult to defend and the keeper had no chance with that one.”

It was the opposite story for Fleetwood, who dropped to within two points of the relegation zone after their sixth successive defeat in all competitions.

Manager Uwe Rosler said: “We played against a top team, changed the shape. We needed to do that, (because) we have conceded too many goals.

“We need to get more compact, we need to protect certain players with having a more compact shape.

“They scored in the last 10 seconds of the first half. That is us, it is is not going in our favour.

“In general, I felt they were the better team in the first half.

“(In the) second half, the players showed a great spirit, nobody downed tools, everyone tried their best.

“Confidence is not very high but we fought hard against a team top of the league, got the equaliser and then we made a square ball in the middle of the pitch and got countered in the 82nd minute.

“That is the story of the game and the story of the last month.”
