Steve Evans lauds Mansfield after crucial victory at Exeter

Mansfield manager Steve Evans could not hide his delight after his side boosted their League Two automatic-promotion hopes with a 1-0 win at Exeter.

Danny Rose scored the only goal of a dire game when he turned in a rebound after Kane Hemmings had been denied by a superb save from Exeter goalkeeper Christy Pym.

The victory moved the Stags up to fourth place in the table, three points behind Accrington.

“It is a fantastic result against an excellent side,” Evans said. “In the first half we should have been three up and nothing fell for us in the box, it was one-way dominance.

“I said to the players at half-time: ‘you are going to get a reaction from this Exeter side because of the quality they have got’. They had a reaction but Conrad Logan has not had a save to make. It would have been hard to take had we not taken all three points.

“The first half was as good as we have played. The biggest complement we give ourselves is that they have not made a clear-cut chance. Our centre-backs won a lot of aerial duels.

“It is just about the three points. We will lose games in these next 13 games and we have got to try and win as many as possible. Teams are fighting for a wonderful prize at both ends of the league and this doesn’t mean anymore than any other league.”

Exeter failed to register a shot on target throughout the 90 minutes and manager Paul Tisdale admitted his side were not good enough.

“It was really difficult conditions again, they started better than us and got that early goal, which is so important here,” Tisdale said. “The important thing is that we lost 1-0 and that is all that matters.

“There is a long way to go in the season yet. We weren’t at our best. We put together another practical set up in place to play the opponent and play the pitch and play the conditions. We have had to do that for a while now and now we have lost one, but we move on.

“We had to change the flow of the game at half-time. I wouldn’t have done it if we were a goal up, we were a goal down and, although I didn’t have to, I felt we needed a change.

“There are 15 games to go and our job is to look at those 15 games and think how many games we need to win and do something about it.

“Everyone is very downbeat and trying to find as many negatives as we can find, but we have lost a game of football, but we move on to the next and keep working hard and keep trying. That’s the way it is.”
