Fleetwood boss Uwe Rosler sacked after defeat at Doncaster

Uwe Rosler was sacked by Fleetwood following a 3-0 reverse at Doncaster which condemned Town to a seventh straight defeat in all competitions.

A Tom Anderson brace and an Alex Kiwomya strike helped Rovers earn their first win of 2018 and left Fleetwood outside the bottom four in League One on goal difference only.

That was enough for Town to part company with the German, who took the club to the play-offs last season, just hours after the full-time whistle.

A club statement said: “Fleetwood Town can confirm Uwe Rosler has been relieved of his duties as head coach.

“The decision was made this evening following a run of results which has seen Town fall to seven straight defeats.

“Everyone at Fleetwood Town would like to place on record their thanks to Uwe for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club.

“The search for his replacement will begin immediately, with Barry Nicholson and David Lucas taking charge of Tuesday’s game against Portsmouth.”

Rosler had refused to comment on his future after the game, where he criticised his side for failing to get the basics right.

He said: “At 1-0, you could see the confidence went out of the team. With the run we are on now that is a little understandable.

“The senior players are not having the level of confidence to hold for longer and that is needed.

“It’s very disappointing. The manner of their goals was so disappointing.

“We are practicing the basics every single day and the players have not done the basics right.

“And you need players to help their team-mates out when they make a mistake, but we don’t have that at the moment.

“In the end, the third goal shows where we are. The manner of that third goal, you cannot top their naivety.

“The players now have to think about their own future now.

“We started exactly how we wanted. We were on the top of them before they scored the first goal.

“We played later on but never really threatened.”

Doncaster manager Darren Ferguson was delighted with the response his side showed from their 4-2 defeat at Walsall in midweek, where they put in arguably their worst performance of the season.

After taking the lead just 13 minutes in through Kiwomya, Doncaster were largely comfortable in a result which eased growing relegation worries.

“I said after the game on Tuesday we wanted to make sure that sort of performance, that level of performance and the manner in which we lost was a one off,” Ferguson said.

“If it was, only time will tell. But certain on the basis of this performance it was.

“It has to be that way. There’s no ifs or buts about it.

“The players knew that when I reminded them of what was expected of them on Thursday.

“We played more like a team that people are used to seeing in terms of energy, application, determination to win a game of football.

“I thought they were very good at it.

“We were dominant. Three goals, a clean sheet – a comprehensive victory really.

“I’m delighted with the players.

“It was a real solid performance, a real good battling performance.

“It gets us back to zero on goal difference which is an extra point on some teams.”
