Paul Warne delighted with spellbinding Rotherham victory against Doncaster

Rotherham boss Paul Warne admitted his side’s dramatic victory over Doncaster was fairytale stuff.

The Millers looked like they were heading to a first defeat since December 2 when they were trailing to John Marquis’ goal going into 12 minutes of added time.

But an incredible late rally saw Michael Smith head home the equaliser and then Joe Newell won it when he converted a penalty with the last kick of the game.

That gave Warne’s men their seventh win in a row and extended their unbeaten run to 14 games – a sequence that has cemented their place in the top six.

Warne said: “I’m a romantic, I just think that epitomised the team, the way we keep going until the end, the run continues and we are really proud.

“I was thinking before the penalty that if it went in, it would be like Walt Disney stuff and if it didn’t go in we’d have still had a point.

“The fact that we scored in the last minute is really special, it has been a really good day at the office.

“I don’t think my lads were as composed on the ball first half and I thought second half we created enough and did enough to get a draw, if not a win.

“What I think we’re good at is getting balls into the box and being an attacking outlet, in the first half the lads went away from that.

“I am sitting here after a win so I can’t complain.”

The Millers looked like being masters of their own downfall when a mistake by Semi Ajayi allowed Marquis to fire Rovers in front in the 39th minute.

The hosts have scored in every game since September and were threatening, but had to wait for 12 minutes of stoppage-time to make the breakthrough and turn the game on its head.

Smith headed home a Newell free-kick in the second minute of added time, and after Smith had been felled, Newell scored from the spot to spark mad scenes of celebration at the New York Stadium.

Darren Ferguson was crestfallen after the game, though he felt the Millers’ equaliser should have been ruled out.

“It’s a hard one to take, my players didn’t deserve that after the effort they put in,” he said. “In the first half, they didn’t cause us any problems.

“As soon as that board went up with 12 minutes on I knew it would give them a lift.

“The first goal is a blatant foul on my centre-half and he’s not seen it.

“In the main we dealt with them fine. It’s a real sore one for us, for everyone, for the fans. It’s disappointing.”
