Derek Adams delighted as Plymouth move into play-offs with narrow Bradford win

Plymouth Argyle boss Derek Adams expressed his delight as the Pilgrims soared to sixth in League One following their sixth win in a row – a 1-0 victory over play-off rivals Bradford City.

Argyle were bottom of the table at the start of December but turned their season around and have climbed into the play-offs as a result.

Antoni Sarcevic scored a 34th-minute winner, drilling the ball home from the right after being teed up by Ruben Lameiras.

Jamie Ness came close to making it 2-0 in the final minute after Bradford had been reduced to 10 men following the late dismissal of striker Charlie Wyke to a straight red card.

Pilgrims boss Adams said: “We have still got 33 points to play for, and the run we are on is excellent. We won’t get ahead of ourselves.

“I thought we started well, on the front foot. I didn’t think it was going to be an easy game. They have been on a magnificent away run.

“To beat a team that are around about us, and get three points, is what matters.

“I thought it was a good move working towards the goal. A good passage of play got Antoni Sarcevic into the penalty box and it was a good goal from him albeit via a deflection.

“I thought if they were going to score it would be from crosses.

“We had opportunities. Jamie Ness could have made it 2-0 near the end. He was unfortunate not to score if he had it would have finished off a fine day for him.

“Offensively we looked good.

“The following we have had at home has been excellent this season but we also get excellent away support, and I am sure we will at Rochdale (next weekend) and Fleetwood (March 10).

“I did think Bradford would be more of a threat today. We looked fairly comfortable.

“I was happy with the side, we made two late substitutions just to see out the game but I was satisfied with how well we did.”

The visitors remain eighth as a result and three points off the play-offs.

Bradford boss Simon Grayson said: “In the first half they were probably a little bit better in the final third, their two wide players, who we expected to be quite lively, tried to make things happen. But they didn’t cause us too many problems.

“We were disappointed at half-time that we didn’t keep the ball well enough when we got into the final third. That was probably the difference.

“In the second half we had more urgency about us with or without the ball and we penned them back for large parts. But we were missing that creativity just to get us back into the game.

“We are trying to restore confidence back into the players, try to get our ideas across quickly but there isn’t a magic wand.

“We need to take small steps, we were hard to play against us. We have to do better when we get the ball. We didn’t really work the goalkeeper.

“Neither keeper had many saves to make and that probably tells you about a lack of quality from both sides in the final third.

“We have got 11 games to go and we are fully aware of what we need to do. The next three games are at home and we are still eighth.”
