AS Roma 0 - 2 AC Milan: AC Milan continue good form with victory over Roma

AC Milan’s good form continued as Gennaro Gattuso’s men defeated Roma 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Patrick Cutrone put the visitors ahead three minutes after the interval with a close-range finish and Davide Calabria’s effort doubled the advantage in the 74th minute.

The result extended seventh-placed Milan’s unbeaten run in Serie A to eight games, six of which have been wins.

They are six points behind fifth-placed Roma, and seven behind Inter Milan in fourth, who they play at home in their next league fixture.

Roma registered the game’s first attempt on goal in the fifth minute when Cengiz Under’s low shot from outside the box was pushed behind by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Patrik Schick, making his first start since December and still yet to score a league goal following his move to Roma last summer, then brought a good save out of Donnarumma in the 23rd minute, although the flag was up for offside.

Lorenzo Pellegrini went down in the Milan box just after the half hour mark as he tangled with Giacomo Bonaventura and Ricardo Rodriguez and saw his appeals for a penalty dismissed.

Pellegrini subsequently struck an effort wide, and Schick then fashioned a delightful turn to get away from two men before his progress was halted in the area by a fine Leonardo Bonucci tackle.

Milan had produced little of note in an attacking sense, but that changed soon after the restart as Cutrone diverted the ball past Alisson having met Suso’s ball into the box.

Diego Perotti drilled a shot just the wrong side of Donnarumma’s post moments later, and Milan were then back on the front foot, with Bonaventura having a strike blocked and Alisson saving efforts from Franck Kessie and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Donnarumma then did well to take the ball away from Schick in the danger zone.

Milan went close to scoring a second when substitute Nikola Kalinic saw his shot well parried by Alisson and Kostas Manolas made a great intervention as Alessio Romagnoli tried to follow up.

And almost immediately after that it was 2-0, Kalinic playing a through-ball and Calabria lifting a shot over Alisson.

Donnarumma then dealt easily with an Aleksandar Kolarov volley, and Fabio Borini, who had replaced Suso, could and probably should have made it 3-0 in stoppage time but blazed a shot over.
