Ton up for Lewandowski in Bayern romp

Robert Lewandowski scored his 100th Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich as the leaders extended their stunning unbeaten streak with a routine 6-0 victory against Hamburg.

The hosts have not tasted defeat since November 25 and have now won 16 of their last 17 matches in that run, with their only blip being a goalless draw in their last home match against Hertha Berlin.

Lewandowski scored two first-half goals to reach 99 in the German top flight and put the hosts 3-0 up inside 18 minutes, following Franck Ribery’s opener.

He looked to have spurned the chance of a century when he missed an 86th-minute penalty but redeemed himself four minutes later when Filip Kostic hauled down Joshua Kimmich for a second spot-kick, which he dispatched to add to second-half strikes from Arjen Robben and a stunning solo effort from Ribery.

Hamburg had conceded 21 goals in their last three league visits to the Allianz Arena and it took just eight minutes for Jupp Heynckes’ side to open the scoring with their first real attack on the Hamburg goal.

Thomas Muller played Robben through to set up a quick break and, despite a last-ditch tackle from Rick van Drongelen, the ball fell perfectly into the path of Ribery before rounding goalkeeper Christian Mathenia to tap into an empty net.

Bayern soon doubled their lead through Lewandowski when Kimmich stood up a cross for the Poland international to tower over Gotoku Sakai and nod inside the far post with just 12 minutes on the clock.

Jerome Boateng, who was making his 250th appearance for Bayern, instigated the move to set up the home side’s third goal in their next meaningful attack when a long ball to David Alaba was cushioned for Lewandowski inside the area to slot home his second.

In a bid to to stop the rot, Hamburg head coach Bernd Hollerbach brought on midfielder Vasilije Janjicic after just 24 minutes and the tactical switch stemmed the hosts’ goal threat for the rest of the first half, but Bayern were comfortable.

Muller was inches from extending the home side’s lead shortly after the restart from a Ribery cross but shot just wide, but the league leaders soon moved further ahead.

Hamburg failed to clear their lines, with Robben picking up the loose ball to set up a neat passing move which ended up back with the former Holland international on the edge of the area to fire into the top corner.

Substitute Thiago Alcantara rattled the near post from close range after Alaba found the Spaniard with a low cross following a patient build-up, while Sebastian Rudy fizzed a shot wide moments after coming on.

Mats Hummels dragged an effort wide when he got on the end of Muller’s cross as Bayern pressed for a fifth goal and it came in spectacular fashion in the 81st minute through Ribery.

The Frenchman picked up the ball of the left wing before jinking past four Hamburg defenders with great skill and control to calmly sidefoot into the bottom corner.

Lewandowski missed from the penalty spot when Kyriakos Papadopoulos was adjudged to have handled but the striker netted a second spot-kick to round off a result that restored Bayern’s 20-point advantage at the top of the table.
