Ryan Lowe ‘gutted’ after Bury let two-goal lead slip against Oldham

Bury manager Ryan Lowe admitted he was ‘gutted’ after his relegation-threatened side allowed local rivals Oldham to come from 2-0 behind to earn a 2-2 draw at Gigg Lane.

The Shakers remain nine points from safety but there is slight hope for the basement club after losing just one of the eight matches since Lowe replaced Chris Lucketti as Bury boss.

Lowe said: “I’m gutted to be honest, very disappointed. The football we played, and the chances we created, was great.

“In the first half we really dominated the game. We created so many opportunities and we fully deserved to be 2-0 ahead.

“We’ve let it slip a little bit in the second half, though. We dropped our standards and we’ve let Oldham back in. Sloppy defending for both goals cost us too.

“We’ve made mistakes with the balls into our box and we were punished by Oldham.

“It’s about winning games now. We’ve dropped two points today, but I can’t be critical.

“The lads were all different class , and that’s why it feels so much like a loss.

“I’m sure Oldham manager Richie Wellens will be delighted, but it has to be more about us keeping our back door shut now.

“We’ve still got 11 games to play and so hopefully that’ll be enough.

Bury went ahead after 13 minutes when Oldham defender Wilfried Moimbe headed the ball straight into Jay O’Shea’s path for the midfielder to fire home from 20 yards.

Neil Danns ran at the heart of the defence before looping a shot over Johny Placide, via a slight deflection from a visiting defender to double their lead.

Oldham halved the deficit four minutes before the interval when Craig Davies tapped home after Duckens Nazon’s deflected shot fell kindly at his feet.

The Latics got the reward their second-half display deserved when Ben Pringle smashed home left-footed from 15 yards with 14 minutes remaining. The point means Oldham moved two points clear of the bottom four.

“We started slowly, made mistakes and played into their hands,” manager Richie Wellens said.

“But I can’t fault the commitment and effort of the players because on another day we might have gone on to win that game.

“The players’ heads are down in the dressing room but we’ve had a bad day. We were nowhere near our best but have taken a point.

“The pitch was obviously heavy so it wasn’t easy for the players. However, come the end of the season, that point will be a bonus for us.

“The lads have battled back really well in the second half and they showed plenty of grit and character.”
