Zinedine Zidane heaps praise on Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo

Zinedine Zidane described Cristiano Ronaldo as someone from “another planet” after his brace earned Real Madrid an unlikely 2-1 victory at Eibar.

The five-time Ballon D’Or winner has scored 14 goals in his last eight LaLiga matches after netting just four times before the turn of the year.

And the Portugal forward took centre stage once again as Los Blancos fought hard for all three points in the Basque country.

Eibar dominated the opening 30 minutes before a wonderful pass from Luka Modric unlocked the home defence for Ronaldo to chest down and drill in from 12 yards.

Ivan Ramis headed in a deserved equaliser shortly after half-time but Ronaldo popped up six minutes from time to convert Dani Carvajal’s cross, leaving Zidane delighted.

Zidane told realmadrid.com: “He’s from another planet. He knows that he’s going to score, he’s very positive. He’s a different and special player.

“His stats speak for themselves. He’s a very good player and he’s ours.”

Real still have a mountain to climb if they are to topple LaLiga leaders Barcelona, but that has not stopped the Frenchman from believing his side can retain their title.

“We’ve still got a chance of winning LaLiga and that’ll be the case until the end of the season,” Zidane said.

“It’ll be tough, but sometimes, if you drop your guard you are made to pay. The important thing is to keep moving forward. We need to keep putting wins on the board if we want to achieve anything, that is what we will try to do.

“Today we managed it. We must enjoy this win, rest up for a few days, something we have not done for a while, and then focus on the Girona game.”

Victory means the reigning Spanish champions have won eight of their last nine matches in all competitions.

And Zidane was impressed with Real’s character against an Eibar side who were on top for long periods of the match.

“You’ve got to recognise the performance from Eibar, who put in a great display,” Zidane added. “They were the better team.

“They were excellent, particularly in the first half. It’s a tough place to come and they’re a good side that are enjoying a super season.

“We knew that we’d have to dig in, and although we struggled when on the ball, we fought together and showed good spirit to get the win. We’re pleased with today.”
