Paris St Germain go 17 points clear in Ligue 1 by edging out Angers

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as 10-man Paris St Germain extended their lead at the top of Ligue 1 to 17 points with a 2-1 victory over Angers.

But the home side were forced to work hard for the win against their struggling opponents after Thiago Motta was sent off in the 16th minute for an alleged stamp.

And Angers gave themselves hope of spoiling PSG’s 100 per cent home league record this season when Karl Toko Ekambi reduced the deficit with 15 minutes remaining.

PSG boss Unai Emery might have still been without the injured Neymar but there was no sign of anything other than business as usual when Mbappe opened the scoring after 12 minutes.

The striker latched on to a neat through-ball from Julian Draxler on the right side of the Angers box and aimed an excellent finish past Ludovic Butelle in the visitors’ goal.

But PSG’s serene progress was threatened just four minutes later when the Italian was shown a straight red card following an incident involving Romain Thomas.

Replays showed Thomas launching a sliding tackle on Motta, who jumped to get out of the way but landed with one foot on his opponent’s ribs.

The footage appeared inconclusive but referee Sebastien Desiage had no doubts about what he had seen and immediately issued Motta a red card.

The home side continued to dominate despite their numerical disadvantage and increased their lead after 25 minutes when Mbappe grabbed his second.

This time the provider was Layvin Kurzawa who cut back a ball from the goal-line into the path of the on-rushing Mbappe and he fired home low past Butelle.

PSG could not make the game safe and briefly looked like they could pay for it in the 75th minute when Ekambi found the net after some neat inter-play with team-mate Flavien Tate.

But it was Emery’s men who came closest in the dying stages, with Mbappe inches from completing his hat-trick six minutes from time when he crashed an effort off Butelle’s cross-bar.

The final whistle marked PSG’s eighth straight win in Ligue 1 and extended their margin over second-placed Monaco, albeit having now played one game more.

And it left Angers still looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone after a result which ended their recent mini-revival of three games without a defeat.
