Graham Westley worried by Barnet’s second-half display against Wycombe

Graham Westley believed his side “disintegrated” in the second half of their 2-0 loss against Wycombe.

A 52nd-minute penalty by Joe Jacobson and Luke O’Nien’s free-kick was enough for the visitors to secure all three points.

Craig Mackail-Smith went down in the area whilst under pressure from Ryan Watson before Jacobson stepped up to drill the penalty past goalkeeper Craig Ross.

The lead was doubled when O’Nien delivered in a free-kick from a wide position which evaded everybody to find the net.

Barnet sit at the foot of the League Two table following the defeat and Westley admitted that the performance has left him worried ahead of next week’s clash at second-placed Luton.

“It’s a difficult one to take today. I thought in the first half we were a good match at the top end of the league but in the second we disintegrated.

“We played on the back foot, we played disjointed, we lost and then couldn’t re-find our way.

“Defensively we opened up to concede the penalty and the second goal again was totally avoidable in terms of giving away the free-kick and the way we defended it.

“Off the back of that second half, I’m actually scared to be going there (against Luton) next week.

“I’m scared that we could be embarrassed. If you go to a place like Kenilworth Road with the home factor that it can bring and perform the way did in the second half then it could get messy.

“We’ve got a massive amount of work to do before now and next weekend. I don’t want to go there and be scared, I want to go with a belief and desire.”

In contrast, Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth was more positive about his side’s upcoming fixture against Crawley where a positive result could see them rise into the automatic promotion places.

“Today was nice because we had that little stumble with the two defeats but the performances have been there except for the horror show against Morecambe,” Ainsworth said.

“It was nice to see the goals fly in today, get a cleansheet and one or two players back to full fitness at a crucial time.

“The fans were magnificent today. They never stopped making noise on this freezing cold day.

“The whole town of Wycombe has won today – the players, the staff, the fans and it’s a really good result for us.

“I’m not going to get carried away. We’ve got Crawley on Wednesday and they’ve had a good result against Carlisle today so we’ve got to make sure we’re on form to make the game in hand count.

“When we notched that goal, we stretched the game and I’m really pleased with what we have resource-wise.”
