Paul Clement hopes Reading have turned a corner

New Reading manager Paul Clement is hoping that his side have ended the “vicious cycle” of failure after their 1-0 Championship victory over QPR at the Madejski Stadium.

Reading secured their first win in 10 matches through Sone Aluko, who capped a mazy solo run with a fierce drive in the 13th minute, to move six points above the relegation zone.

QPR dominated much of the game but wasted a series of chances, most notably at the death when Jake Bidwell saw his penalty saved by Vito Mannone.

By then, Reading had been reduced to 10 men after substitute Yann Kermorgant had been sent off for two bookable offences.

“I’m most pleased for the players and the fans,” said Clement, who replaced Jaap Stam last week.

“The fans showed up in numbers, on a miserable day weather-wise that can often keep supporters away.

“But they turned up, got behind their team and made a big noise at the end of the game, especially when the penalty was saved.

“And obviously I’m pleased for the players. They’ve had a difficult time this season.

“I know what it’s like to be involved with a team when you’re not getting the results and the confidence goes and you’re not playing well.

“It’s a vicious cycle but, hopefully, we’ve broken that now.

“It was a scrappy performance at times but we dug in and we were full of passion and fight and we got over the line at the end.

“Our goal was worthy of being a match-winner in itself. That was a big moment as well as the penalty save at the end.

“It was a brilliant save from Vito and we got the three points that we needed and wanted. That everyone wanted.”

QPR’s unbeaten four-match run came to an end, leaving them firmly in mid-table.

“You get what you deserve in life if you keep going,” manager Ian Holloway said.

“I thought that some of the performance was excellent but you don’t win games if you don’t take your chances and finish things off.

“That was probably the absolute classic of that today.

“With the chances that we created, we should not have lost that game.

“We should at least have had a point but, unfortunately, we haven’t. Sometimes, that’s the way it goes.

“It’s all about believing in yourselves and getting on a run. That’s very difficult in this division.

“We’ve got a very young group who I’m delighted with.

“But we have to try to move forward as a club and I’m paid to do that.

“I feel that we’ve moved massively forward already, especially when you look at that performance.

“I’m delighted with my lads. I want them to grow and to believe.”
