Argyle boss Adams frustrated after stalemate

Plymouth boss Derek Adams admitted his disappointment following a goalless draw with League One play-off rivals Portsmouth at Home Park.

Argyle had a late let-off when Portsmouth skipper Brett Pitman’s goal-bound header was deflected on to the bar in stoppage time.

A minute before Jamal Lowe had rounded stand-in Argyle keeper Kyle Letheren but his shot into the far corner was cleared off the line by on-loan Bristol City central defender Zak Vyner.

Adams said: “I am delighted with the performance today, for large spells in the game we dominated possession and passed the ball well and I am disappointed not to have won it.

“They sat in, came for a point and got what they wanted.

“That was disappointing for us. Portsmouth didn’t really create very much, towards the end we hit the bar with our own player on to our own goal other than that nothing much really.

“I didn’t really see Portsmouth doing anything today. I thought they looked a bit leggy and we were unfortunate, especially in the second half, not to have gone ahead in the game.

“We were a pass away from getting on and that was our problem today: One more pass and we would have won it and that would have been nothing more than we deserved.”

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett said: “Wins make the difference at this stage of the season.

“But I have no complaints about the result. It is what it is. I am not sure it does either club any favour but a draw won’t do either of us harm.

“The good thing is our season is still ahead of us.

“Our strongest period was the final third. I thought Jamal Lowe’s shot was going in but it was a great goal-line clearance from the Plymouth defender. It looked like Jamal had scored.

“Then hitting the bar is a good sign of finishing the game strongly.

“I am delighted with the way we finished the game because at the start of the season we weren’t doing that. It’s a good sign we are improving as the season goes on, that’s what you want.”
