Falkirk safe after comeback win over champions

Falkirk secured their Ladbrokes Championship survival by coming from behind to beat champions St Mirren 2-1.

The Bairns gave their title-winning hosts a guard of honour on to the field but were less welcoming once the action began and a tepid first half-hour brought only a freak half-chance as Robbie Thomson’s misplaced clearance bounced over the bar off team-mate Gavin Reilly.

Falkirk’s Joe McKee and Alex Jakubiak threatened from long range as a goalless half drew to a close.

St Mirren led 10 minutes after half-time when a free-kick led quickly to a penalty, from which Myles Hippolyte scored his first goal for the club.

Falkirk wasted a spot-kick of their own in the 81st minute when Craig Samson saved from Lewis Kidd but the equaliser came as Joe McKee tapped in after Kevin O’Hara headed against the bar.

And in stoppage time, Jakubiak’s cross was not cleared and Craig Sibbald finished to lift Falkirk 11 points clear of the relegation play-off place, whose occupants Dumbarton have three games to play.
