Ryan Lowe pleased with Bury response to relegation in Doncaster draw

Bury boss Ryan Lowe praised his side for delivering the response he demanded following their relegation last weekend as they battled out a thrilling draw with Doncaster.

Lowe gave a furious criticism of his players as their drop into League Two was confirmed on Saturday.

And they looked on course for defeat when dominant Doncaster opened up a two-goal lead through Andy Butler and John Marquis.

But Bury fought back and lead with a Niall Mason own goal, a Jay O’Shea penalty and a George Miller effort, only for Doncaster to level again courtesy of Andy Boyle.

“It’s a fair point in the end but I’m a little disappointed to not end up with the three,” Lowe said afterwards.

“Doncaster are a good team so it’s a good result coming here and getting a point.

“I felt we got the 100 per cent effort and commitment I wanted after Saturday’s loss.

“I’ll hold my hands up, the shape just wasn’t right the first 20 minutes.

“I admit that I made a mistake but ultimately you’ve seen the performance the lads have given me.

“The boys have been fantastic for me tonight.

“Sometimes you have to be brave and try things.

“Their second goal was a fantastic goal and a quality goal in this league. If you see that in the Premier League your eyes light up so we knew what they were about.

“The lads were brilliant and everyone in the squad has had a real go tonight and got a justified point.

“You saw we dominated the ball at times and we certainly held our own.”

Rovers boss Darren Ferguson criticised his side for a lack of discipline and admitted feeling lucky they earned a point from a game they came so close to throwing away.

He said: “You’re never going to get a better opportunity as a player to enjoy a game of football when it goes to 2-0.

“You should be professional enough and disciplined enough to do the right things to win the game comfortably.

“The moment Bury scored we lost all our discipline and in the end it was a good point for us. It just became so open.

“It’s a good point for us. We didn’t want it at the start of the game and we certainly didn’t want it when we went to 2-0.

“The players just lost their discipline. The second goal was awful. The third goal was awful.

“I don’t know whether at 2-0 they thought we had to go on and win four or five.

“The players became frustrated and the fans became frustrated as well.

“I think the players have got to hold their hands up and say that in the end they were lucky to get a point.”
