Paul Warne delighted with Rotherham’s achievements this season

Rotherham manager Paul Warne is now happily preparing for the League One play-offs following their 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers.

Michael Smith’s stunning early opener put Rotherham on their way but they had to wait until the final minute, when substitute Caolan Lavery struck from Joe Newell’s cross, to ensure the vital points.

Warne can now prepare his players for the play-offs and says a few will be rested over the next fortnight.

He said: “It takes the pressure off the lads a little bit but we are still going to perform at our maximum.

“The lads will get a few days off to refresh. I will still try and win the next two games because you want to go into the play-offs on good form.

“But it is nice to know that when I go to sleep on a Friday night that it’s not do or die.

“I don’t think we played at all cylinders. I don’t think it was nerves, it was just physicality.

“I am really pleased to get the win and the clean sheet in difficult circumstances. My overall feeling is of pride.”

Warne has helped produce a stunning turnaround at Rotherham following their relegation from the Championship last term.

He said: “Overall, the lads deserve to be a top-six team. They are a great group. I don’t think we have overachieved but the lads have had to play at full tilt every game.”

Rovers boss Darrell Clarke is looking to the summer where he says improvements will be made to the squad.

He said: “We gave them a rubbish goal and I was very angry at half-time because we got into the final third and our final ball was massively lacking and sloppy.

“We started the second half really well but we have got to finish chances against the better teams. You have got to be clinical otherwise you are chasing the game.

“I am getting every ounce I can out of this group of players. They have got to keep showing me that they are top-six players and we fall short on a few things.

“Being clinical, game management and decision-making when we are chasing the game. Those are all the elements of what a top-six team is so we have got to keep working on that.

“We will change things around in the summer to try and overachieve and get in the top six.

“We are going to have to be very proactive. The league is going to be more competitive next year so we will see what I have got to play with and how I can freshen things up.”
