Danny Coyne reveals Paul Hurst’s half-time rocket inspired Shrewsbury to victory

Shrewsbury responded impressively to Paul Hurst’s half-time team-talk to overturn an interval deficit and claim a 3-1 win over Peterborough.

Trailing to a Gwion Edwards strike at the break, the Shrews turned the tables to come out on top thanks to second-half goals from Omar Beckles, Stefan Payne and Lenell John-Lewis.

Third-placed Shrewsbury are now preparing for the play-offs as they chase a place in the second tier of English football for the first time since 1989.

Goalkeeping coach Danny Coyne said: “The lads responded to the manager’s team-talk at half-time, took everything on board and you could see the result in the second half.

“We were more on the front foot, we passed it a lot better, created more chances and got the result in the end. It was very pleasing.”

Peterborough had the chance to double their advantage early in the second half before the Shrewsbury fightback started, but goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray made an excellent save to deny Leonardo Da Silva Lopes.

“He did great,” said Coyne, a former Wales international goalkeeper. “He stood up well and put the onus back on the player to try and beat him. He had a good strong hand on it, kept it out and overall I thought he was excellent tonight.”

As for the challenge ahead, Coyne stressed: “We just need to give it a right go now in the play-offs and we’ll be doing everything we can to get that promotion.”

Posh boss Steve Evans cut a frustrated figure as he reflected on defeat on a night his team really needed to win to keep alive their slim play-off hopes.

He said: “If you defend like that you concede. We should be 3-0 up in the game and, based on the game really, that would have been fair. But if you have suicidal defending it will cost you.”

Evans, whose side were without key duo Jack Marriott and Marcus Maddison through injury, added: “We should have got the second goal. We’ve had some poor finishing, haven’t we?

“But when there’s a consistent trait of bad defending and there’s a consistency to not finish, all bar the boy Marriott and Maddison, who we’ve not got tonight, then it tells you that some are not good enough, so we’ll go and do our business as soon as we leave Fratton Park a week on Saturday.”

Evans admitted he is now looking forward to making his mark on the Posh squad.

He added: “I think we’ve given people enough opportunity to perform.

“We knew there was grave concerns when we came in. We tried to remain positive, which we’ll do until we come out of Fratton Park in fairness to everyone else fighting for those play-offs.”
