Crawley boss Harry Kewell hopes to hit ground running next season

Crawley head coach Harry Kewell is targeting a better start to next season as he seeks to improve on his first campaign in charge.

Kewell is satisfied with the progress made after they were installed as second favourites for relegation, and is planning to boost his staff with new additions.

The Reds failed to end their winless run at home as a second-half goal by Harry Pickering gave Crewe a 2-1 victory and left Crawley with only one win from their last 11 games.

Pickering’s 51st-minute goal settled it after Crawley skipper Jimmy Smith had cancelled out a fifth-minute opener by defender Perry Ng.

Kewell said: “When I took the role I spoke to other managers and they said the most important thing was to survive.

“I am pleased that we have played some decent football and broke records.”

Former Liverpool and Leeds star Kewell is eager to cut out the “ugly and silly goals” that his side have conceded.

He added: “We’ll get off to a better start next season. I’ve got plenty of ideas and a few people to bring in.

“We wanted to put a stop to what was happening here and we have, but we make silly errors. We just have to stop silly mistakes.”

Crewe boss David Artell felt his men were “heading in the right direction” after clinching their third win in four games.

Artell said: “We’ve got a lot of hope now. It is all developing really well and going in the right direction.”

Artell admitted his side did not play well at home to Morecambe the previous week but was satisfied with the manner of performance at Crawley.

He added: “This was not vintage Crewe by a long way. You have got to have a level of performance. Last week wasn’t, this was.

“We showed we are a good team and squad and we want to sign off in the right way in our final game at home to Cheltenham.

“We didn’t turn over the ball so much in this game and the goals were good finishes.

“Perry Ng was the best player on the pitch. He looked calm, assured and there’s still plenty to come; he is a real top prospect.”
