Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Raheem Sterling, calling the 23-year-old's understanding of the game "global."

Sterling has scored 23 goals in all competitions this season, winning the League Cup and the Premier League along the way.

Guardiola has received plenty of praise for improving Sterling's performances, with the winger scoring only ten goals last season as part of a City team who failed to win any silverware.

The City boss has revealed that while Sterling still has aspects of his overall game he can refine, the England international has the right attitude to keep getting better.

"Sometimes we judge him about 'he missed that goal', 'he missed again that shot', but the amount of actions he creates, the assists today, he creates fouls, penalties, because he's so fast and quick, sometimes he is unstoppable in those situations," Guardiola said, according to the Independent.

"And the most magnificent thing is he is 23 years old, so he is still focused, keeping the desire to get better, as a player.

"His understanding of the game is global: he's a guy who can create inside, make a movement outside, dribbling, runs in behind.

"Still he misses simple balls still, and he has to be more aggressive in this kind of things."

Sterling's season in numbers

Sterling has scored 18 goals in the Premier League this term – that's more than double his previous best return (nine for Liverpool in 2013-14).

He has also provided eight assists in the Premier League, meaning he has been directly involved in 26 of Manchester City's 102 league goals this season.

His passing accuracy has actually gone down from 84% last season to 80% this season, but he has completed more take-ons per 90 minutes (2.83) than last term (2.21).

Sterling and his teammate's next opponents will be Huddersfield Town, who travel to the Etihad on Sunday.
