Carvalhal confident Swansea can survive in Premier League

Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal is confident his side will stay in the Premier League because survival is in their own hands.

The Swans slipped to a damaging 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth, going down to Ryan Fraser’s first-half goal, and missed the chance to move clear of the bottom three.

Their run of seven games without a win, the last three of which they have failed to score, has pulled them back into danger, but they will be playing in the top flight again next season if they beat Southampton on Tuesday and Stoke next Sunday, both at home.

And the Portuguese believes that is a situation everyone would have taken when he came to the club in December.

“I am not worried because we depend on ourselves,” Carvalhal said.

“When we arrived if I would have said we have two games to finish the season and it would be possible to stay in the Premier then no one would have believed me.

“It was really bad and no one would have believed me.

“We have these things in our hands, we can do it, let’s do it.

“In the Liberty Stadium we are more strong, my team play better at home, the fans are making a big impact.

“When you depend on yourself, we can do it.

“You don’t need to look at other teams, you must look to ourselves. In reality we play two home games and we are happy about that.”

Swansea were not without their chances at the Vitality Stadium as Mike van der Hoorn was brilliantly denied by Asmir Begovic and then Martin Olsson and Jordan Ayew missed clear opportunities.

In the end, Fraser’s 37th-minute goal, where he curled in from 20 yards after a short free-kick, did for the Swans.

“We had two or three very clear chances to score and against Bournemouth it is important to score first,” Carvalhal added. “We had the chances but we didn’t score, they scored and they kept the game they liked it.

“The goal was the moment of the game because it changed everything.”

Carvalhal would love to be in Eddie Howe’s position in the opposition dugout as the three points for the Cherries ended any niggling doubt that they would be drawn into relegation danger.

It was their first win in six games and ensured a fourth successive season in the Premier League, not that Howe thinks his side are becoming an established force.

“I just think you have to look at the clubs down the bottom of the league and ask does it get easier?” Howe said.

“A lot of those clubs have been established in the Premier League for a long time and before we kicked a ball this season, you never had those teams where they are in the division.

“So I don’t think there is an established team in the Premier League apart from the top six or seven. Everyone else, if you have a bad season you can end up down there.

“The challenge for us gets harder not easier, to improve and keep progressing the football club is a real challenge. That is certainly how I have felt over the last three years.

“We have got Premer League players who have got experience now, but expectations change, people’s reactions to things change and that is the hardest thing.”
