Bale and Benzema back on the scene

Nobody expect Real Madrid to align their BBC frontline at Barcelona on Sunday and yet Zinedine Zidane's return to the once-indisputable trio heralded a strong showing from Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

Needless to say, Cristiano Ronaldo was the focal point of the attack in the first half, scoring before being forced off with an ankle knock delivered as he poked Benzema's header across the line.

After his colleague had exited the field, Bale stood up and showed his class with a stunning strike from outside the box to end the scoring at 2-2.

With his 13th goal in a LaLiga campaign that has been somewhat tumultuous, the Welshman made it 16 for the season as a whole to prove the adage that, when he plays, he scores.

If Bale had been forgotten then Benzema has endured quite the opposite time of it lately, continually bearing the brunt of criticism from all corners and now responding with fine form.

After his brace against Bayern Munich, the striker claimed an assist in another strong Camp Nou outing that demonstrated his usefulness to Real Madrid.

Barcelona struggled to get a grip on Benzema's movement and his link-up play advanced many an attack in ways that indicates a positive end to this latest difficult season under the trusting watch of coach Zidane.
