Rooney returned to his boyhood club last summer as Romelu Lukaku went in the opposite direction and signed for Manchester United.

He’s figured 31 times for them in the Premier League so far this season, bagging 10 times in total.

The most memorable moment of Wayne Rooney’s return to Everton came last November when he scored his first Toffees hat-trick in a 4-0 win over West Ham.

It seems the 32-year-old former England captain could be about to call time on his second stint at Goodison Park.

Widespread reports this lunchtime claim Rooney has agreed a deal in principle to swap Everton for DC United.

The forward is apparently set to sign a contract which will tie him down at Audi Field until the end of the 2020 MLS campaign.

Reports indicate Rooney’s move will be completed when the MLS mid-season transfer window opens on July 10.

DC United are currently bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference table having collected five points from seven games.

So it seems unlikely Rooney will add to his trophy-haul this year if he makes the move across the Atlantic.

Rooney, a veteran of 16 senior seasons, won five Premier League titles and one Champions League with United.

He also has Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup winners’ medals to go alongside his 119 England caps.

Rooney netted 253 goals for United and 53 for England on the way to becoming the Red Devils and the Three Lions’ all-time record scorer.
