Cowdenbeath stay up at Cove’s expense

Cowdenbeath preserved their 113-year SPFL status after beating Cove Rangers 3-2 in the second leg of the Ladbrokes League Two play-off final.
Cowdenbeath survived last season with a penalty shoot-out win over East Kilbride in the play-offs, and they faced another nervy afternoon on Saturday before seeing off Highland League champions Cove.
Following a goalless first leg in which they were indebted to goalkeeper David McGurn, the hosts took a seventh-minute lead in the return meeting at Central Park through young full-back Harvey Swann’s penalty.
However, Cove hit back and were on level terms within two minutes thanks to Mitch Megginson, who then put the visitors ahead in the 22nd minute with his second of the match.
Swann, Cowdenbeath’s player of the season, levelled things up just after half-time and it was left to Bradley Smith to become the Blue Brazil’s hero when he struck a fine winner 20 minutes from time.
Cove finished the match with eight men as Paul McManus, Scott Ross and Eric Watson were all sent off in stoppage time as tempers frayed.
