Mark Robins plays down talk of controversy after Coventry reach Wembley

Coventry boss Mark Robins attempted to play down the controversy surrounding his side’s 4-1 win over Notts County in their Sky Bet League Two play-off semi-final second leg.

The Sky Blues will face Exeter at Wembley on May 28 after sealing a 5-2 aggregate win over County.

Maxime Biamou scored twice, including from an overhead kick, with Marc McNulty and Tom Bayliss securing the win.

Jorge Grant had made it 2-1 on 37 minutes and had Jonathan Forte’s goal not been ruled out for offside the hosts would have been level.

Robins said: “I am delighted to be at Wembley and we are one step away from regaining the position we lost last year.

“It will be a really tough game, but we will be going all out to get back at the first attempt.

“I was asked questions about us getting through and the controversy. But I don’t think there was any controversy about our performance.

“I think it’s a little unfair for people to be talking about that. We got a penalty given to us in the first leg, but then we got one turned down.

“At the end of the day, it’s rankling Notts County, but I thought we deserved to be going to Wembley. I thought we were brilliant.

“We started off on the front foot and the finishes for the goals were outstanding.”

After Biamou and McNulty put Coventry ahead, a County cross caused panic in the City defence and Grant crashed his finish past goalkeeper Lee Burge.

Forte appeared to be onside when he found the net after the break to make it 2-2 but his effort was ruled out by an offside flag, much to the disappointment of Magpies boss Kevin Nolan.

Biamou and Bayliss secured the win late on, which did little to improve Nolan’s mood.

“I am gutted. I feel aggrieved because three of the decisions over the two legs have cost us. We had momentum and when Forte scores, he is onside by a yard,” he said.

“I don’t know how he has put his flag up but he has and it’s cost us again. It’s upsetting and they’ve cost us a chance to get to Wembley.

“Coventry came here and played well, but we more than matched them. We had them on the ropes in the second half and if the goal stands then we are in.

“And if they had not given the penalty last week then we are still a goal up. It’s just all ifs and buts, but they can’t get decisions like that wrong.

“I’ve been crying out for professional referees and the linesman wasn’t keeping up. They’ve dropped two clangers. They got it completely wrong.”
