Mark Hughes has signed a three-year deal to stay on as the manager at Southampton.

The former Stoke and Manchester City boss guided the Saints to Premier League safety, which included beating relegation rivals Swansea 1-0, after taking over from Mauricio Pellegrino in March.

His assistant manager Mark Bowen and first-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also signed long-term contracts.

"Mark, Eddie and I are thrilled to have signed long-term contracts with the club," Hughes told the club website. "It was the only option we considered, having spent the last eight weeks with the club.

"Now it is vital that we take the unbelievable support we received from the fans during the last few games into next season.

"The staff and the players will work hard every day to deliver the success this club deserves, and with everyone pulling together we will achieve our goals."

Sky Sports News reported earlier this week the 54-year-old was close to a new deal after helping Southampton gain 11 points from their final 10 Premier League games.

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger admitted to Sky Sports News last week that Hughes had dragged the club out of an "abyss" by saving them from relegation.
