Paul Pogba wants to be remembered like Zinedine Zidane, says Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand believes Paul Pogba wants to be remembered in the same vein as his compatriots Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane.

The 25-year-old French midfielder, who has just completed a second campaign with Manchester United following his return in 2016, is preparing to take part in a third major tournament with Les Bleus.

As one of France's most high profile players, there's an element of pressure on his shoulders, but Ferdinand feels Pogba will embrace it as he's determined to go down as a great.

"Paul is desperate to announce himself on the world stage," he said (via The Mirror). "Paul is someone who wants to be known as a great player. When you look at the history in the French national team – with Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane – he wants to be remembered as a player like that.

"But Pogba has to play well. And he has to win – and that's not easy. There will be pressure because expectations are huge on France.

"Pogba and [Antoine] Griezmann will be carrying the hopes of their nation on their shoulders – and I would like to see Paul do it.

"He's a showman and someone who wants to be the centrepiece of what comes out of that team. Now he has the opportunity to do that."

Pogba's international career so far

The native of Lagny-sur-Marne earned his debut French cap under present boss Didier Deschamps in March 2013, playing the full 90 minutes, when Les Bleus entertained Georgia.

His first international goal would come two appearances later in France's 2-4 win away to Belarus. Then representing Juventus, he'd go to the 2014 World Cup, registering a goal and two assists in five matches as France would be eliminated by eventual champions Germany in the quarter-final phase.

Pogba, now a mainstay, featured in each game as France reached the final of Euro 2016 only to lose to Portugal after extra-time. To date, he's won 53 caps and has nine goals to his name.
