LIVERPOOL ignored the chance to sign Jordan Pickford in 2015 - three years before his England heroics tonight in Russia.

That is according to ex-Reds goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, who urged the Anfield outfit to sign the shot-stopper.

Everton ultimately snapped up Pickford from Sunderland last summer in a £30m deal.

He was crowned the Toffees' Player of the Season in his debut year at Goodison Park.

But he could have been playing on the other side of Merseyside if Liverpool had listened to Kirkland's calls.

Kirkland, who worked with Pickford at Preston, told talkSPORT: "I tried to get Liverpool to sign Jordan two or three years ago when I was at Preston with him.

"I was raving about him to the Liverpool staff, saying 'this lad is the best I've worked with'.

"I told them he is going to be something special – but not many people take notice of me to be honest!

"Unfortunately they didn't get him and Everton have got, for me, a steal even at £30m."

Pickford was one of England's heroes tonight in Russia as they won their World Cup last 16 tie against Colombia on penalties.

It was the first time ever England have won on spot kicks at the World Cup.

After drawing 1-1, Pickford expertly saved from Carlos Bacca before Eric Dier slotted home the winner as the Three Lions prevailed 4-3.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are still searching for a new No.1 with Brazil and Roma keeper Alisson seemingly out of reach for Jurgen Klopp.
