West Brom boss Moore backs Burke to make big impact

West Brom boss Darren Moore insists Oliver Burke can make an impact this season after the Baggies’ Carabao Cup win over Luton.

Midfielder Burke’s first goal for the club sealed a 1-0 win for Albion on Tuesday and sent them through to the second round.

It was just Burke’s third start for the Baggies following his £15million move from Red Bull Leipzig last summer.

He failed to make an impact at The Hawthorns as Albion were relegated from the Premier League last season.

“He has been patient, continued to work hard in training and with that it’s another option for me. It’s great for Ollie, really pleased,” said Moore, who made eight changes from Saturday’s win at Norwich.

“We’ve seen flashes, glimpses of his game, which can benefit the team. He’s an effective player and we have seen how dangerous he can be.

“It was a cool and composed finished. It will do him the world of good. He looked equally as composed up front as he does wide right.

“I’m really pleased with the win and clean sheet. It was difficult, we didn’t have it all our own way. Luton started well but as the game wore on we got stronger.”

Hal Robson-Kanu wasted several fine chances in the first half and Luton went close through Jake Jervis and Matty Pearson but could not find the breakthrough before Burke struck in the 62nd minute.

The Scotland international rolled the ball under James Shea after a lucky rebound off Harvey Barnes.

The Hatters failed to recover from falling behind and are searching for their first win of the season following promotion from Sky Bet League Two last season.

Boss Nathan Jones said: “We were excellent. We controlled the first half and caused them a lot of problems. The only critical thing I can have is that we lacked a bit of cutting edge.

“In terms of the goal we were massively unlucky. The ricochet gave them the one clear cut opportunity they had in the game.

“They showed their quality in the second half.”
