Last-gasp Danny Whitehead strike gives Salford victory
Posted Sunday, August 19, 2018 by PA
Danny Whitehead scored an 89th-minute winner as Salford defeated fellow National League promotion hopefuls Chesterfield 3-2 to make it back-to-back wins.
Summer signing Adam Rooney took his tally to four goals when he gave big-spending Salford a 19th-minute lead.
Rooney’s strike partner and fellow new boy Rory Gaffney then hit the post for the hosts who were looking to build on their midweek win over Halifax – their first victory of the season.
Chesterfield, who started the day fifth after losing their 100 per cent start to Barrow on Tuesday, weathered the storm and Michael Nelson, Kyel Reid, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Zavon Hines all went close to an equaliser.
That duly arrived in the 43rd minute when Hines, capitalising on a defensive mistake which almost produced an own goal, tapped in the leveller.
Salford rallied after the break and re-took the lead when Carl Piergianni headed home Danny Lloyd’s corner, but again Chesterfield came back and Fortune made it 2-2 almost immediately.
The hosts continued to push, though, and Scott Wiseman hit the post before Whitehead’s dramatic late winner.
