Jackett lauds Lowe improvement as Portsmouth continue winning start

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett hailed the improvement Jamal Lowe has made over the last year after the winger starred in their 4-1 win over Oxford at Fratton Park.

Lowe scored two and was involved in another as Portsmouth netted all four goals in the second half to make it three League One wins on the bounce – their best league start in 30 years.

And Jackett was quick to share his delight over 24-year-old Lowe, who joined the club from non-league Hampton & Richmond Borough 18 months ago.

He said: “It was great to score four goals at home, I was really pleased with us going forward as we looked strong.

“At half-time, I told them to keep playing the way we were as we were dominating and we had so many chances. I thought the goals would come.

“From where he was (Lowe) last year to now, he has improved a lot.

“If you look at where he was 12 months ago, trying to establish himself in League One, with a year of regular football it has settled him down.

“He had ideas of wanting to play wide-left but now he has settled on the right side, he has made really good progress.”

Portsmouth’s Gareth Evans missed a first-half penalty but made up for that with a goal in the 48th minute when he fired past Jonathan Mitchell.

Lowe’s cross was then met by Oxford’s Rob Dickie who turned it into his own net to gift the hosts a two-goal cushion.

Pompey then secured victory in the 65th minute through Lowe, who added his side’s third with a flick past Mitchell in the midst of a goalmouth scramble.

Oxford were given a brief lifeline with a minute of normal time left when Portsmouth defender Jack Whatmough sliced his clearance into the back of his own net.

But Lowe was on hand to quash any thought of a comeback when he curled home a fine effort from 25 yards out.

The defeat leaves Oxford rooted to the bottom of the table and still without a point, but manager Karl Robinson insisted that he is not worried yet.

Robinson said: “I knew it was going to be hard this season, but I didn’t think it was going to be this hard with the players – who are trying their best.

“There are 43 games to go. I am not worried. I know it’s going to turn at some point and when it does turn they will start playing with more confidence.

“If you go two goals down here at one of the biggest stadiums in the country then you are whipping a frenzy up.

“But, the second goal is an own goal which is unlucky. I feel that the players have to stick together a bit more and get rid of any negativity, knowing it will come good.”
