Ten-man Morecambe secured their first win of the season with a dramatic 1-0 Sky Bet League Two win over Northampton at the Globe Arena.
A goal from A-Jay Leitch-Smith, his first for the club, earned the Shrimps the spoils but the hero of the night was midfielder Alex Kenyon who was forced to go in goals for the final five minutes of the game after the sending off of Barry Roche and produced two superb saves to keep the lead intact.
Morecambe took the points with their first goal in eight games in first-half injury time.
A long ball forward caused problems for the Northampton defence and Leitch-Smith nipped in between defender and goalkeeper to slot the ball under David Cornell to give the home side a welcome lead.
Morecambe could have had more had it not been for Cornell who made a fine saves from Rhys Oates and Andy Fleming.
Shrimps’ keeper Roche was sent off for a second yellow card on 85 minutes when he brought down Junior Morias.
With all the substitutes used Kenyon took over the gloves and saved superbly from Daniel Powell and then Morias before Sam Hoskins blazed a great chance over from 12 yards as Jim Bentley’s side took a welcome three points.
