Shrewsbury boss Askey hits out at referee after Doncaster deadlock

SHREWSBURY manager John Askey was angry at the performance of referee Darren Drysdale after his side’s goalless draw at Doncaster.

The Shrews were denied what looked like a clear penalty in the first half when Shaun Whalley appeared to be brought down in the box.

Despite plenty of appeals from the visitors, Mr Drysdale refused to consider awarding the spot-kick – much to Askey’s annoyance.

“I saw it like everyone else and it was a blatant penalty,” said Askey.

“You won’t see a more blatant penalty.

“I would like to speak to the referee but probably best not to as it doesn’t change anything.

“If he watches it I am sure he will realise what a big mistake it was.

“We have to take encouragement from this as this is a difficult place to come and they are probably the best team we have played.

“I thought the longer the game went on the better we got.

“The first 20 minutes we had to weather the storm a little but still Doncaster didn’t create that many chances.

“We had the better chances in the game and I cannot ask anymore of the players.”

Shrewsbury were denied what looked like a clear penalty in the first half.

Whalley meandered through the home defence before being upended in the box by home skipper Andy Butler.

In terms of goalscoring chances, it was the hosts who created more with Shrews’ goalkeeper Joel Coleman having to be alert to keep out Tommy Rowe before denying the lively Mallik Wilks.

The visitors turned it around after the restart and peppered the hosts’ goal with Lenell John-Lewis being kept out twice by the hosts’ Marko Marosi.

Doncaster’s John Marquis almost stole victory with just two minutes left but glanced a header agonisingly wide as spoils were shared.

Rovers’ manager Grant McCann said: “I thought we controlled the game for 60 minutes and they had a good spell for 20 or 25 minutes.

“When you’ve lost a game it’s always difficult to bounce back.

“We didn’t want to lose two in a row.

“You need to take your chances and get that first goal.

“We were in control but lacked that little last bit.

“We got better as the game went on and we had them on the ropes and we did well with the ball and without.

“We’re still striving to have a full 90-minute performance.

“I think our goalkeeper made three or four good saves but equally their goalkeeper did well too so it probably evens itself out.

“We need to recover well and be ready for Saturday.”

McCann concurred with Askey over the performance of the referee.

“I think the referee was very average and lost control of the game first half.” added McCann.
