Jack Ross ‘a very happy man’ after Sunderland cruise against Gillingham

Jack Ross was a happy man after watching his Sunderland side come from behind to thrash Gillingham 4-1 and maintain their unbeaten start to the Sky Bet League One season.

The Black Cats conceded after just three minutes when Gills striker Tom Eaves scored his fourth goal of the season, but the visitors hit back to win the game thanks to goals from Chris Maguire, George Honeyman, Max Power and Josh Maja.

Sunderland have now picked up 10 points from their opening four games and are just two points off leaders Peterborough.

Ross said: “I’m a very happy man after that performance.

“I was really impressed with the players this evening, we took our chances when they came and that’s all you can ask for.

“The scoreline probably flattered us a little bit. Gillingham were a threat, there’s no doubt about that.

“It’s a great result for us, a great performance all round and I’m pleased with the lads for how they performed.

“We went behind very early but we didn’t let our heads drop and went down the other end and equalised.

“The support was excellent. I’m pleased we put in a performance for the fans. It’s a long way to travel on a Tuesday night and they deserve it.”

Gills boss Steve Lovell was disappointed with the scoreline but pleased with his side’s display.

He said: “Sunderland are one of the best League One sides we’ve seen here for a few years.

“It was a good game to watch. Of course I’m disappointed with the way we lost, but the boys gave everything.

“The majority of the game I was very pleased with, we had a lot of chances and didn’t deserve to lose 4-1 in my opinion.

“You can’t gift teams goals, especially teams as good as Sunderland. We need to start putting our chances away because we created more than the scoreline suggests.

“We gave possession away more than we would have liked, but the boys gave everything. Tom Eaves had a good game again and we showed we have plenty of legs in the team.”
