Fleetwood’s rout of Scunthorpe delights Joey Barton

Fleetwood boss Joey Barton praised his side’s character after they cruised to a 5-0 victory at Scunthorpe.

The Cod Army came into the game on the back of conceding a frustrating stoppage-time equaliser at home to Rochdale on Saturday, but braces for Ched Evans and Wes Burns and a fine second-half strike from Ashley Hunter meant they responded with the club’s biggest-ever Football League win.

“I thought we were superb, especially given we were responding to conceding in the 95th minute at the weekend,” said Barton.

“That result felt like a defeat, but it’s testament to the group we have with the way they responded.

“Scunthorpe were in the play-offs last year – they had a totally different season to Fleetwood – and this is a tough place to come, but we felt if we imposed our game on them, opportunities would come.

“Certainly that’s the way it panned out and it’s nice as a coach when it comes together like that.

“Goals change games and credit to Scunthorpe for keeping going – they kept digging in when it could have been a really difficult night.

“We attack and defend as a team and I felt both sides of the ball we were first class. The challenge now is to keep that going.

“Yes there are lots of positives, but it’s one result. We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. The nature of this league means we’ve got another couple of tough fixtures coming up.

“I’m looking forward to getting the lads on the training ground and explaining how we can be better, because we can always be better.”

Evans set the ball rolling in the 16th minute, netting a rebound from close range, and bagged himself a second before setting up Burns for his first of the night in a rampant five-minute spell.

Fleetwood were 4-0 up before half an hour had passed when Burns fired in from the edge of the box and Hunter rounded off a great night for the Cod Army by curling into the top corner from 20 yards with 57 minutes on the clock.

Scunthorpe boss Nick Daws had no excuses for his side’s disappointing display – admitting they gifted their visitors the points.

He said: “We’ve been turned over and conceded four, five terrible goals through bad individual and team defending, which has cost us.

“There’s no hiding place, it’s a really simple one (to sum up). It was unacceptable.

“That’s what I’ve said to the players – we’ve got to be better and more mentally resolute.

“For 15 minutes we did what we’d asked the players to do and then after we concede a goal, we concede another and another through poor defending.

“There’s not a great deal we can affect when that happens.

“The players are disappointed and down – as they should be, as we all are – but we’ll come back into work tomorrow and try to right the wrongs.”
