Dutch player has one more year at Ajax

Frenkie De Jong will spend another season at his beloved Ajax, after the Dutch club qualified for the Champions League, but hasn't ruled out a future move to the Camp Nou.

Ajax progressed to the group stages of Europe's most prestigious competition, after beating Dynamo Kiev 3-1 on aggregate in the qualifying round.

Playing in the Champions League was a key factor in ensuring that De Jong remained in Holland, although sporting director Marc Overmars had always been reluctant to let the Dutch midfielder leave.

"I wanted to play for Barcelona and perhaps one day I will, but it won't be this season," the player said to NOS.

His and Barcelona's paths are yet to cross, although the Catalan giants are keen to maintain a firm interest in the youngster with all eyes on the future.

Now that he has confirmed his immediate future, De Jong will focus his attention to competing in the Champions League with Ajax and trying to regain the Eredivisie after four years of PSV Eindhoven dominance.

"I think it will be another fun year," he said.

There is of course the possibility that the Dutchman and his side could face Barcelona in the Champions League group stages, with the draw set to take place Thursday evening.

"I would love to play against Barcelona," De Jong finished.
