MANCHESTER UNITED reportedly forced Alexis Sanchez to miss Chile’s upcoming matches amid his struggles under Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United signed Sanchez from Arsenal in January, beating Manchester City to secure his signature despite the player previously being eager to play under Pep Guardiola.

So far, however, the transfer has backfired. The Chile international has managed just three goals so far - against Huddersfield, Tottenham and Swansea.

Sanchez is keen to be a Manchester United hit, though, and is spending the week relaxing in the city while Chile lock horns against Japan and South Korea.

It has previously been claimed the 29-year-old made the decision to skip the matches himself.

But the Manchester Evening News say United instead forced him into missing the two showdowns.

It is said they made the decision because they want him fully fit and firing for their Premier League clash with Watford on August 15.

There have recently, though, been reasons for optimism.

Sanchez impressed for United as they beat Burnley 2-0 at the weekend.

The Chile international provided an assist for Romelu Lukaku and looked dangerous throughout the match at Turf Moor.

Meanwhile, speaking recently, Gary Neville expressed concerns over Sanchez.

And he also thinks the player has stunted the development of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

"He [Mourinho] brought Alexis Sanchez into the club and look at what's happened to them since Alexis Sanchez came in," Neville told Sky Sports.

"If you look at the actual stats and you think about before Sanchez arrived at the club, they were playing quite a bit of football, they were scoring goals and contributing, they had assists.

"But since Alexis Sanchez has come to the club, obviously he's played a lot of the games, and that's what's happened.

"There's been a big impact negatively, so they've [Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial] got to get back to the standards they were setting earlier in the season and what they're capable of."

Should Sanchez continue to fail, he will be the latest No 7 to toil at Old Trafford.

Not since Cristiano Ronaldo have they had a player capable of flourishing in the jersey.

Since Ronaldo, Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria and Memphis Depay have all failed to live up to expectations.
